The City of London Corporation has won Green Flag status at 15 of its open spaces.
The prestigious scheme is an international benchmark, recognising some of the very best managed parks and green spaces in the world.
The award, run by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy and overseen by a panel of expert judges, is now into its third decade.
14 City Corporation sites also claimed the Green Heritage accreditation in recognition of their historic features and high standards of conservation.
The City Corporation protects over 11,000 acres of open space in London and south east England – including Burnham Beeches, Epping Forest, Hampstead Heath and over 180 sites in the Square Mile – investing over £38m a year.
These sites, most of which are charitable trusts, are run at little or no cost to the communities that they serve. The winners are outlined below.
Epping Forest & The Commons Committee:

- Farthing Downs and New Hill
- Kenley Common
- Riddlesdown
- Spring Park
Hampstead Health, Highgate Wood & Queen’s Park Committee:
- Hampstead Heath
- Highgate Wood
- Queen’s Park
West Ham Park Committee
- West Ham Park
City Gardens & Open Spaces Committee:
- Bunhill Fields Burial Ground
- City of London Cemetery and Crematorium
Highgate Wood and Queen’s Park have won the award every year since it was launched in 1996, a feat achieved by only two other green spaces in the country.
Chairman of the City Corporation’s Epping Forest and Commons Committee, Ben Murphy, said:
“These awards are testament to the hard work and dedication of our world-class staff and volunteers. In 2022, our volunteers contributed over 6,000 hours of their time to protect this celebrated nature reserve.
“I am so proud of everything they do to keep our open spaces in top condition for our millions of visitors.”
The City Corporation protects over 11,000 acres of open space in London and south east England – including Burnham Beeches, Epping Forest, Hampstead Heath and over 180 smaller sites in the Square Mile – investing over £38m a year.
These sites, most of which are charitable trusts, are run at little or no cost to the communities that they serve.
The City Corporation’s open spaces remove an estimated 16,000 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere every year, equivalent to 44% of the organisation’s annual carbon footprint.
They are protected from being built on by special legislation.
