City of London: Tribute to Sylvia Moys MBE

Yesterday, the Epping Forest and Commons Committee paid tribute to former member, Sylvia Moys MBE, who passed away on 6 November 2024.

Mrs. Moys diligently served as City of London Common Councillor for the Ward of Aldgate from 2001-2021. During her tenure, Mrs Moys served on a huge number of Committees and Sub-Committees where her contributions were extensive. Most notably, she served as Chair of the Board of Governors of the City of London School for Girls from 2009-2012 and was Deputy Chairman of the Commons Consultative Group.

In 2004, Mrs. Moys also became a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Plumbers.

In 200, Mrs. Moys was awarded an MBE for services to the City of London Corporation and to education in Croydon, having served as a governor at Riddlesdown Collegiate for many years.

Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Epping Forest and Commons Committee, Ben Murphy said:

“We remember Sylvia with great fondness. She was an accomplished Councillor who would generously share her knowledge and experience with less experienced members and staff to ensure they found success. She was a stickler for high standards in everything that she did and was well regarded for her analytical brain and her attention to detail. Sylvia was a fierce defender of the City of London Corporation’s conserved green spaces. She believed in the power of working in partnership with local communities and volunteer groups, and served as Deputy Chairman of the City Commons’ consultative groups, which helped form the policy of the City Corporation. She will be missed, but fondly remembered as someone who made a difference. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time.”

Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Plumbers, Mike Swallow, said:

“It was I who brought her into the Livery in recognition of her great contribution as Peter Lerwill’s consort – he was not married and knew her through the insurance profession. He was terminally ill and might not have got through the final months as Master but for her. He died not long after his Ladle Dinner and I thought it only right that her connection with the Company should not be abruptly severed. She was very generous to me in my first year in sharing her great knowledge of the City Corporation and Livery.
